Mingzheng’s Story

Mingzheng Hu, University of Edinburgh

Mingzheng shares his reflections on applying and winning the Estelle Brisard Memorial Prize in 2024 …

Winning the Estelle Brisard Memorial Prize has been a truly rewarding experience, one that I never anticipated when I first began my research journey. I remember feeling hesitant about submitting my paper, believing that the chances were slim. It was my supervisor, Dr Omolabake Fakunle, who encouraged me to take the leap and try. Her words of encouragement reminded me that taking chances is part of the academic journey.

My paper, “Exploring student rationales in relation to enrolment, articulation and immobility on a TNE programme in a University in China,” is close to my heart. It explores how students navigate complex decisions within transnational higher education, which is fast becoming an area of keen interest in the diversification of internationalisation. Through my research, I aim to contribute to educational policy development and provide insights into student decision-making processes.

The recognition from the Estelle Brisard Memorial Prize has not only validated my work but has also inspired me to continue pursuing my academic career with even greater determination. It’s given me confidence in my research direction and motivated me to keep contributing to the field of education.

Looking back, I realise how important it is to embrace opportunities, even when self-doubt creeps in. This award has taught me that every effort counts, and sometimes, the most unexpected outcomes bring the most joy.

I am grateful to SERA for this honour, and I hope my story encourages others to believe in themselves and take the next step forward.
